Sclerotherapy is most commonly used to treat surface veins and has been used with safety and success since the 1930’s. The treatment is a non-surgical procedure, performed at our clinic with no anaesthesia required. Sclerotherapy can be used to treat various sizes of veins, using a very small, fine needle.
During Sclerotherapy of solution called a ‘sclerosant’ is injected into the vein. The precise sclerosant depends upon the size of the spider vein. This solution causes the vein walls to stick together, closing it, and the vein is absorbed by the body over time.
A very fine needle is used for treatment, minimising discomfort and allowing for multiple vein treatments and when performed correctly, by expert hands, the success rate of treatment is close to 90%.
Following Sclerotherapy treatment, there is very little to no recovery period needed. After treatment patients need to walk for 30min and can then return to work or carry on with normal activities straight away.
