Endovenous Laser Ablation (ELA)

ELA is an effective laser treatment for varicose veins and a great alternative to traditional invasive surgical vein stripping. Endovenous Laser Ablation (ELA) treats large veins using laser light to seal the incompetent underlying veins.

Endovenous Laser Ablation enables you to achieve the maximum results with minimal discomfort, pain or bruising. Post-operative complications are rare and the success rate of treatment is almost 100%.

The Endovenous Laser Ablation Procedure

ELA is performed under local anaesthetic, allowing you to remain awake throughout the procedure, but only feeling minor discomfort. There is no need for hospitalisation and the treatment is generally completed in under one hour. During the procedure, a small laser fibre is inserted into the underlying incompetent vein. The laser is activated as the fibre is withdrawn, causing the vein to thermally ablate and close. The treated vein is then absorbed naturally by the body.

After ELA, your leg will be placed into a compression stocking and you will need to walk almost immediately. Routine activity can be resumed that day and athletic or strenuous activities a short time later.

We will advise that you will need to walk for a minimum of 30 minutes per day for two weeks post-treatment and should avoid lifting heavy weights or high impact activities during this time.
