What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are swollen veins, most commonly on the back of the leg, that appear a bluish-purple in colour. Often the cause of genetic factors, pregnancy, or an unhealthy lifestyle, they are a source of insecurity for many men and women who have them. Most find they are purely a cosmetic issue, with no real pain associated with the condition.
How do varicose veins form?
Varicose veins form when upward-flowing leg veins cease to function properly. Blood is forced to travel in the other direction, leading to pooling of the blood and a higher blood pressure within the valve. Here, a varicose vein develops, looking twisted, lumpy or swollen. Varicose veins are almost always benign. The root cause of the condition remains unknown.

You're in safe hands with Dr Paul Davis
After graduating from the University of Queensland with his medical degree in 1995, Dr Paul Davis pursued a keen interest in the non-surgical treatment of varicose veins. In 2006, he decided to focus solely on treating varicose veins and has been practising exclusively in this field since. Dr Davis has gained post-graduate training in phlebology in both Australia and the USA.
The Varicose Vein Clinics, both on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane, marry his passion for exceptional clinical results with an immediate focus on the patient experience in a friendly, relaxed environment.
Sclerotherapy treatment for varicose veins
Sclerotherapy is a treatment for varicose veins which has been used with success since the 1930s. It is a common, non-invasive treatment performed at the Varicose Vein Clinic with little to no anaesthesia necessary. Using a very fine needle, it is effective in treating many sizes of blood vessels.
Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy to treat varicose veins
Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS) is a pre-emptive treatment for veins which occur post-surgery. Similar to conventional Sclerotherapy, the non-surgical procedure utilises ultrasound images to gain with an improved degree of accuracy and guidance.
Endovenous Laser Ablation for the treatment of varicose veins
Endovenous Laser Ablation (ELA) delivers maximum results with minimal discomfort, pain or bruising. Under local anaesthesia, ELA treats large veins using laser light to seal incompetent underlying veins.
All surgical procedures carry risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
